Alexis Mac Allister stunned by what 27-year-old Liverpool player did vs Fulham yesterday

Liverpool players have been soaking in the feeling of qualifying for the Carabao Cup final.

Having navigated their way past Fulham in the semi-final last night, the Reds are heading to Wembley for the first time since 2022.

A number of players took the credit for yesterday’s success. Virgil van Dijk hailed the performances of youngsters Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah, and both deserve praise.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp made sure to point out just how important the versatility of Joe Gomez has been. That was on show once again at Craven Cottage.

But the man who perhaps deserves the biggest applause is goal-scorer on the night Luis Diaz. Diaz has had a tricky season in many ways and Klopp did call him out for being a little wasteful last night, too. However, the Colombian’s 11th minute goal turned out to be the difference.

Following his semi-final deciding intervention, Diaz took to Instagram to celebrate. “We’re going to Wembley,” wrote the 27-year-old. Plenty of Reds were in below the line sharing in Lucho’s joy. One was Alexis Mac Allister, who’s comment of “How you play this,” perhaps works better in Spanish. Still, Macca was clearly impressed with his mate. Bravo, Lucho.

After the last handful of games, Diaz should be feeling slightly better about his output this season. His tally of seven goals is still below what it probably should be, but he’s at least now closing the gap on his fellow forwards.

His strike last night also means this one is now the Colombia international’s most prolific season at Liverpool.

Given that he arrived in January in 2021/22 and was out injured for most of 2022/23, that shouldn’t be a surprise. But in terms of games played, all three campaigns are comparable.

In his first year – or half-year – Diaz played 26 games, scoring six times. Last season, the former Porto man got five goals in 21 games, and this term he now has seven in 28. Steady improvement, perhaps.

Of course, the burden of goals is not all on Diaz, thankfully. And it should be pointed out that Cody Gakpo has just two more goals than him this season. Darwin Nunez has three and Diogo Jota four. The gap to Lucho isn’t that big.

It’s also worth remembering that Liverpool’s No.7 had a legitimate, lovely goal ruled out against Tottenham Hotspur, too.

Nonetheless, Liverpool supporters will hope that Diaz can kick on a little more and hit some real goal-scoring form. He’s on for double figures which isn’t bad, but beyond 15 shouldn’t be out of his reach.

Fingers crossed that Mac Allister will be stunned even further by his teammate in the coming weeks and months.
