‘He’s a top player’… Callum Wilson says 25-year-old Liverpool player really needs to be patient now

Liverpool have been brilliant this season, and a lot of it is thanks to the tremendous rebuild Jurgen Klopp and his recruitment team conducted last summer. The Reds brought in four new midfielders, who have completely transformed the side.

The impressive thing about the four new recruits has been the fact that they’ve all added something different to the midfield. Dominik Szoboszlai gives energy. Wataru Endo reads the game really well. Ryan Gravenberch provides an offensive threat. And Alexis Mac Allister has a sublime technical ability.

The latter is probably the player who Liverpool fans have had the most expectations of. It’s understandable given his pedigree. Mac Allister arrived as World Cup winner, but he’s also had to be patient. Something Callum Wilson has pointed out recently.

Callum Wilson on Alexis Mac Allister

Mac Allister hasn’t had the easiest time adjusting to life at Liverpool. But against Bournemouth he probably produced his best performance yet in a Liverpool shirt. And now Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson has explained why the Argentine needs to be patient.

Speaking on The Player’s Channel with Michail Antonio, Wilson said Mac Allister was a ‘top player’ but that he may need to bide his time at Liverpool.

“I guess they paid the money for him so they want him and see him as a vital part of the squad but Liverpool are a top side and with top sides you have top competition, so he has to bide his time, be patient and there is obviously other players who play in that role that are also world class,” Wilson explained.

“You have to be performing well in training and in matches to get the nod. He’s a top player, but Trent is in a similar position now and you have a lot of players in that Liverpool front line and midfield who are chipping in with goals this season, so it’s a great problem for the manager to have.”

Wilson is right, there is a lot of competition at Liverpool, but at this stage, Mac Allister is probably one of the first names on the team sheet. Especially after his performance against Bournemouth.
