Though the January transfer window continues to tick by uneventfully, Liverpool are still being linked with potential signings.
Defensive reinforcements are still seen as the priority by plenty of supporters. As a result, most of the players being mentioned in connection with the Reds have tended to be defenders. Sporting’s Ousmane Diomande for instance.
But there have also been claims that Liverpool are looking to bolster their forward line. Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise was mentioned as a target, as was Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville.
However, speaking on his YouTube channel yesterday, journalist David Lynch suggested that although Liverpool are certainly looking at Olise in particular, sources at the club are happy with what they currently have.
“The idea I’m getting from sources I’m speaking to at Liverpool, they feel they’re well stocked in the forward area,” Lynch reports. “Olise I’ve no doubt is someone they’re looking at and Summerville with the numbers he’s putting up recently I think he would be someone that fits the profile. Both aged 22 as well.
“But it’s all about whether Liverpool will actually need someone and I don’t think at the moment they would say that they do, particularly if they’ve got a chance to keep Salah. If they can pour more money into giving him a couple more years on a contract extension to keep him, I think that is a better route to go down then maybe investing in the forward line.”
Liverpool not hunting forward additions
In fairness, this is a completely understandable position from Liverpool. They’ve invested very heavily indeed in revamping the forward line since 2020.
With five starting level attackers in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, there’s really no need to add another.
Of course, as Lynch alludes to, the big elephant in the room is just what will happen with Salah. If the Egyptian is intending to stay at Anfield for a while longer, then that need becomes even less.
But rumblings about his future and a possible move to Saudi Arabia have continued into this season. There has to be an expectation that Liverpool will have to fend off interest in Mo again in the summer.
If that proves too good to turn down for Salah, then the Reds will have to do something. They don’t have a natural, left-footed replacement for their No.11 in the squad.

With Salah away at AFCON – and also now seemingly injured – Liverpool are about to find out just how hard it is to replace the Egyptian.
Olise could potentially be the player to do that. Although it would be a big jump up in expectation for the Crystal Palace man.
The one thing working in Liverpool’s favour here is time. If Salah is aiming to leave the club in the summer, you’d expect he’d give plenty of notice of his intention to do so. As a result, the Reds can assess and work on potential targets in good time ahead of the summer. In an ideal world though, Mo stays and we can defer this hunt for a little while yet.
