Liverpool always have their finger on the button in regards to top young talent from around the world.
They might not always sign said young players right off the bat, but if they do well, make the right steps and progress as expected, the Reds will swoop in at some stage.
One such player making those steps right now is Leicester City’s Abdul Fatawu. The 19-year-old’s is a name which should be familiar to Liverpool fans. The Reds were heavily linked with him way back in 2021.
Three years ago, there were even some claims that Liverpool had actually signed Fatawu and subsequently loaned him to Sporting. In the end, that turned out to be false. Instead, the Ghanaian had simply joined the Lisbon side on a permanent basis.
Since then, Fatawu has been loaned out to Leicester, where he’s currently doing well in the Championship.
Now, football data experts Squawka have included the youngster in a group of players ideally placed to be a direct swap for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool. Running some tailored requirements through their system, Fatawu came out as one of several options.
Fatawu shows his potential
Leicester seemingly hold an obligation to buy Fatawu should they be promoted to the Premier League this season.
As that looks increasingly likely, it seems a good bet that we’ll see the teenager in the top division next year.
On the one hand, that could obviously hinder Liverpool’s chances of getting him. Leicester are no mugs in the transfer market and if Fatawu’s worth keeping, then the Foxes will do what they can to keep hold of him. But we actually think that this could increase Liverpool’s hopes of brining the reported former target to Anfield.
That’s because the Reds tend to like to see how players progress in the Premier League rather than sign them direct from the Championship. If Fatawu goes up and does well next season, you can see Liverpool’s previous interested being reignited.

Still very, very young, there’s no reason to discount him from a potential move at all. If he’s showing up on data charts as being in some way similar to Salah, then that’s something Liverpool should consider.
We already know that he’s on the Reds radar. As a left-footed right winger, Fatawu will surely start to become an attractive option if he’s performing at the top level.
In truth, his output could be slightly better in the Championship. Two goals and seven assists in 23 appearances isn’t exactly Salah form. It isn’t bad either, though. For a 19-year-old, it’s in fact pretty impressive.
So, he may have wriggled from Liverpool’s clutch once already, But if Fatawu keeps on his way, he may not do so again. Reds take note.
