Last season, Liverpool struggled when it came to everything. But most importantly, Liverpool struggled with the counter-pressing. Such a key element of Jurgen Klopp’s style of play. What once worked perfectly fell apart completely last season.
But now the counter-press is back again for Liverpool. And it’s working better than ever. Jurgen Klopp’s side are once again dominating opponents.
One of the key factors behind this resurgence is definitely the fact that Klopp completely overhauled the midfield. Last season, the midfield had looked rugged. But this season with the new arrivals – there is newfound energy.
And a key player in bringing this new energy to midfield has been Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboszlai – the best in the Premier League
Dominik Szoboszlai was always going to be a perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s style of play. He’d been brought up in the Red Bull school – which is very similar to Klopp’s gegenpressing philosophy.
But still, the way he has settled in seamlessly has been impressive. And the stats highlight that as well.
According to a new study by Statsbomb, Szoboszlai is the player who averages the third most counter presses per 90 in Europe’s top five leagues. Only Manuel Ugarte (7.9) and Florian Wirtz (6.8) average more counter presses this season than Szoboszlai (6.5).
With Ugarte playing in Ligue 1 and Wirtz in the Bundesliga, this also means that Szoboszlai averages the most counter presses in the Premier League. It’s just yet another reminder of how good his start has been for Liverpool. Something Harvey Elliott can attest to, as he recently called him ‘unbelievable’ in training.
