Liverpool are ramping up their efforts to bring in new centre-back signings.

The Reds have been linked with a plethora of defenders ever since Joel Matip was struck down with a season-ending injury last month. But with over half of the January window now gone, Liverpool have so far kept their powder dry.

According to 90min, that could soon all change, though. They claim that the Reds now have their eye on a number of players as they look to make two additions.

Surprisingly, Levi Colwill is named as being someone still of interest in that regard. HITC broke that news yesterday, with 90min relaying that Liverpool are ‘still monitoring’ the 20-year-old’s situation at Chelsea.

Meanwhile, the Reds are reportedly targeting ‘one more established name and one player for the future’. The more established name mentioned here is Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah.

Liverpool are claimed to have been ‘watching Tah closely’ over recent months as Leverkusen remain unbeaten in all competitions. Despite the German side reportedly being unwilling to sell the 27-year-old, the Reds are now said to have ‘concrete’ interest in bringing him to Anfield.

Liverpool ramp up Tah interest

Liverpool’s interest in Tah has reportedly been very long-standing indeed. Mentions of he and the Reds dating back seven years or so can be found in the annals of the internet.

Over the past 12 months, they have returned again. In summer 2023, there were claims from Sky Sports that Leverkusen could sell the German international for as little as £17m.

This reportedly piqued Liverpool’s interest, and they were claimed to have held talks with Tah.

Nothing ever came of that, but you can see why the Reds would be willing to come back in for him now. With Leverkusen top of the Bundesliga and flying under Xabi Alonso, Tah has been a key man.

Former manager Peter Bosz once claimed that Tah and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk had ‘parallels’ in their games [Voetbal International]. This season, Alonso’s man has been showing that.

The two defenders are certainly both dominant in the air. According to Fotmob, Tah ranks in the 79th percentile for aerial duels won per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga this season. Van Dijk finds himself in the 82nd percentile in the Premier League for the same stat.

The two of them together would be hugely difficult to beat.

From our point of view, we can understand the thought behind bringing in an experienced player like Tah to fill the gap left by Matip. But in our opinion, it’s time for Liverpool to look to the future instead. Let’s see if anything comes of it.
