Liverpool have identified a young Juventus defender as a potential transfer in 2025.
The Reds are on the look-out for a new centre-back, with journalist Fabrizio Romano today confirming that they’re currently making calls to agents.
That follows a spate of transfer stories this morning. Links to Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah have resurfaced, with claims also being made that Sporting centre-back Goncalo Inacio is aware of Liverpool’s interest in him.
The Tah story comes from 90min, and they’ve also chucked in a few other names for Reds fans to watch. One of the more interesting ones is 20-year-old Juventus defender Facundo Gonzalez.
Gonzalez, who is currently on-loan with Sampdoria in Serie B, is reportedly being ‘monitored’ by Liverpool, as they target a young centre-back. However, it doesn’t sound like there is anything imminent for the Uruguayan. 90min claim that Gonzalez is potentially being watched in preparation for 2025.
Another name put forward is Talleres defender Kevin Mantilla. The Argentinian club’s president spoke out about Liverpool’s interest in the youngster last week and that is confirmed here, too.
Liverpool watching Gonzalez
This may be plenty of Liverpool supporters’ first time hearing about Gonzalez. But the Sampdoria loanee has a growing reputation.
He only signed with Juve last summer, having been brought in from Valencia.
That came on the back of a first senior call-up to Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay in June. Although Gonzalez didn’t make his debut in the summer fixtures, he will no doubt have become familiar with tales of the nation’s indomitable No.9 – Darwin Nunez.
Having been part of the Uruguayan team to win the U20 World Cup in 2023, Gonzalez is another whom big things are expected of.

But that’s for the future. For now, Juventus didn’t see him as being quite ready and Facundo was immediately loaned out to get experience in Italian football.
That he has done, featuring in 13 of Samp’s 20 Serie B games this season. Not exactly a nailed-on starter, but certainly a first-team regular.
By the sounds of it, Liverpool have been one of the teams suitably impressed by Gonzalez’s performances so far.
If Juve are equally enamoured, then they would feel like a difficult team to buy from. But let’s keep an eye on this over the next year or so.
