Liverpool have a young player who could go on to reach the ‘very top level’ of the game.

This season has once again underlined the talent within the academy. Jarell Quansah has stolen the show to become the latest youth team player to look like he has a genuine future with Liverpool.

But as well as bringing through talented youngsters, the Reds have recently looked to acquire the best and brightest from elsewhere in the country, too.

One of those signed with that in mind was Fabio Carvalho in 2022. Things haven’t quite worked out for Carvalho, who’s spending the second half of the season at Hull City on-loan.

But having already raved about the 21-year-old upon signing him, Hull manager Liam Rosenior has once again re-iterated just how much potential Fabio possesses.

“It’s a massive move for him,” the coach said via Hull Live. “I think every step you make in your career – knowing Fabio as I already do, a lot of thought went into this move from his end and rightfully so. Every single step you take as a young player, I know about his ambition. I know where he wants to end up and he’s got all of the potential to end up at the very top level.”

Carvalho backed to sparkle

It’s all well and good these kinds of things being said about Carvalho, but it’s time for him to prove it out on the pitch.

Back when he signed for Liverpool, the Portugal U21 international even claimed that he had designs on winning the Ballon d’Or during his career. Not just one Ballon d’Or either, multiple.

The confidence is commendable and you like to see that in a young player. It’s probably part of the reason Liverpool felt sure enough to sign him from Fulham.

But since then, Carvalho couldn’t have looked further from a future best player in the world.

A subsequent failed loan move to RB Leipzig, and a climb back down into the Championship, suggests that the forward still has a long way to go.

Having seen his new club fall to a 2-1 loss against Norwich on his debut on Friday, things haven’t got off on the best foot in Hull, either.

At least Carvalho got 90 minutes under his belt, though. For now, the priority should be to get back to playing week-in-week-out. From there, he can hopefully return to Liverpool in the summer with renewed confidence.

Make no mistake though, a disappointing spell in the Championship could be terminal to his chances at Anfield. We’ve heard a lot of talk about how good Fabio is over the last 18 months. It’s time to start seeing some concrete evidence of it.
