Preston manager shares what went wrong for Calvin Ramsay, after Liverpool recall

Preston manager Ryan Lowe has confirmed that Liverpool have recalled defender Calvin Ramsay.

The Reds haven’t had much luck with loans this season. A number of players have already been brought back early, with Fabio Carvalho now on his second club of the season.

In reality – aside from the recalled Owen Beck – the only temporary switch to have really worked out for Liverpool is Tyler Morton at Hull City. Sepp van den Berg has also done well at Mainz, but the Bundesliga side are not having a good season.

With just two appearances to his name all season, Ramsay’s has been one of the worst. And now, speaking after his team’s win over Bristol City today, Lowe told the Lancashire Evening Post that fitness issues had prevented the 20-year-old from getting going.

“We’ve got no information on it yet, but Liverpool are calling him back,” said the manager. “We are just waiting on them to officially announce it, but he has gone back to Liverpool yeah.

“He had Covid obviously, but in terms of fitness – it was an issue because he wasn’t fit enough to be selected early doors. He was then fit and available, coming up against Middlesbrough and starting against QPR. After that, he wasn’t and it’d only been the last week or so he was back fit.”

Ramsay heading back home

The way things have gone for Ramsay at Preston, this is not a surprise in the slightest.

Despite initial excitement over the prospect of the Scot turning out for them at Deepdale, it just hasn’t happened for him.

After a season spent mostly out injured last year, Liverpool couldn’t afford for Ramsay to stall for another full campaign.

As a result, a recall looked inevitable. Let’s just hope that Calvin can find the right club for the second-half of the year.

With Trent Alexander-Arnold currently out injured, there may even be an argument to keep him at Liverpool for now. Conor Bradley has stepped in well so far, but with Joe Gomez at left-back, Bradley is the only option.

It might be wise to have Ramsay there just in case anything should happen to the Northern Irishman.

Though that would be sensible, it would also likely mean that Ramsay would barely play for the remainder of the season. He perhaps needs the game time more than Liverpool need him right now.

Having arrived in 2022 with so much promise, things couldn’t have gone much worse for the Scotland international. Preston had looked like a good fit, but it wasn’t to be. Fingers crossed that a move back home will lead to something better to come.
