Liverpool are interested in hiring Max Eberl as their new sporting director.
The Reds are currently on the hunt for a more permanent solution to the key recruitment figure, with Jorg Schmadtke still in place as a stop-gap solution.
Schmadtke has done a handy job since being brought in to take over from Julian Ward in the summer. But it’s always been clear that the German isn’t in it for the long-haul.

Now, according to journalist Christian Falk, Liverpool have identified a potential solution. Writing on Twitter this morning, Falk claims that the Reds are interested in the recently job-less Eberl.
“According to our information, FC Liverpool are interested in bringing in Max Eberl as sporting director,” says the journalist. “Ex-Wolfsburg manager Jorg Schmadtke (59) is current sports director of Jurgen Klopp’s (56) club since June. Bayern is also in Talks with Eberl.”
Liverpool looking at Eberl
Given Eberl’s past, it shouldn’t be a surprise to hear that Liverpool like him. The Reds seemingly love every bit of the Red Bull philosophy.
Eberl may only have been at RB Leipzig for around nine months, but you’re not considered for that job unless your values align with what’s going on there.
From a Liverpool point of view, the values they put in recruitment have to be slightly different than Leipzig’s – and the other Red Bull clubs.

Unlike the likes of Leipzig and Salzburg, the Reds are at the top of the footballing food-chain. As a result, their needs in the transfer market are slightly different.
Nevertheless, the principles remain the same: bring in young players who have high ceilings and aren’t afraid of hard work. The success of players like Ibrahima Konate and Dominik Szoboszlai at both clubs show the similarities that are there.
So, although he isn’t necessarily of the Leipzig ‘school,’ Eberl should be someone very familiar with these concepts. Although it should be said that according to rbleipzig.com, he was relieved of his duties in just two weeks ago, after ‘failing to commit’ to the club.
That he spent 14 years as sporting director at Borussia Monchengladbach is significant, too. The Foals are another club who use a data-led approach to bring in gems at low-cost who may have been missed by other clubs. Eberl used that to great success in Gladbach, could he do the same on Merseyside?
