‘Unbelievable’ Liverpool youngster not expected to complete his loan, he isn’t even training anymore

Liverpool haven’t had much luck with their army of loan players this season.

As ever, the Reds sent a number of youngsters off to temporarily join other teams last summer. But after just half-a-campaign, five have already returned, with Calvin Ramsay also potentially to follow.

Not all came back for the wrong reasons. Owen Beck was actually having a super time out at Dundee. Liverpool chose to recall him in the light of permanent bids from other teams as well as a need for first-team cover.

But according to French outlet La Voix Du Nord, that is not the reason that centre-back Billy Koumetio could be sent home from Dunkerque.

Actually, no reason is explicitly given for Koumetio’s potential premature arrival back on Merseyside. All that’s said is that the 21-year-old is no longer participating in training.

As a result, it’s suggested that Koumetio is ‘not expected’ to complete his season-long loan in the French second division. Another one bites the dust.

Koumetio loans takes a turn

There was time when Koumetio looked like he may genuinely have a future at Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp was impressed with the France U18 international after bringing him in from Orleans in 2018.

Koumetio even played twice for the Reds’ senior team. After making his debut with a late cameo as an 18-year-old back in 2020, Billy also played the full second-half of Liverpool’s Carabao Cup penalty shootout win over Leicester in 2021/22. Big things were expected of him.

Since then though, the trail has gone cold for Koumetio.

A loan at Austria Wien didn’t go to plan last season. Just like it looks like will happen this time around, the defender was recalled in the New Year.

Following the termination of his loan last year, Liverpool U21s coach Barry Lewtas hailed Koumetio as being an ‘unbelievable’ talent [The Athletic]. But one year on, and that no longer really rings true.

In Austria, things had started well for Koumetio, as he got a run in the team. And this year the same thing happened again.

He has actually started eight of Dunkerque’s 19 Ligue 2 matches, but hasn’t featured now since mid December.

As a result, things seem set to end early and on a sour note for Koumetio. If he isn’t in training then Liverpool need to pull him out of there as quickly as possible. Expect to see some updates on this over the rest of the month.
