Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo was delighted by the performance of Curtis Jones against Fulham.

Jones was again one of the key men for Liverpool last night. The Scouser got the Reds level with a deflected effort and even picked up the Man of the Match award.

Gakpo was another who made a difference. Having come off the bench in the second-half, the 24-year-old ended up being the match-winner.

And with the two players speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Gakpo hailed Jones’ impact.

“He played a really good game,” raved the Dutchman. “I said what I said before and it still stands. I am really proud of him and he deserves it.”

We’re not altogether sure we agree that Jones was Liverpool’s best player last night.

Sure, he got the Reds back level and was generally positive with the ball. But just like plenty of his teammates, we didn’t feel the 22-year-old was at his best.

Instead, we’d have given the gong to Darwin Nunez. Having come on at the same time as Gakpo, Nunez was the difference in the end.

Picking up two assists and testing the goalkeeper three times, the Uruguayan was – as usual – a chance magnet.

Without a number of their most creative players, that’s exactly what Liverpool needed against Fulham.

Nevertheless, that isn’t to say that Jones was bad. He was hailed by Harvey Elliott prior to the game and backed that up with another goal at Anfield.

That’s now four for the season for Curtis with all of those coming in the last six games.

Whether he’s as good as he can be with his general performance, it’s important that he’s still contributing where it really matters.

Without Salah to lead the goal-scoring, Liverpool will need everyone to chip in now. Jones is doing that with aplomb.
