Jamie Redknapp was delighted by the impact of one Liverpool substitute against Fulham this evening.

The Reds came from behind in tonight’s Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg to win 2-1. After a tepid first-half, Liverpool were far better after the break.

He may not have scored, but Darwin Nunez was perhaps the key to that turnaround. And speaking on Sky Sports immediately after the game, former Reds captain Redknapp praised Nunez’s impact.

“He was a real difference Nunez,” raved the pundit. “He came and gave them energy. That’s exactly what they needed.

“His movement was so good. He gave Fulham real problems second-half.”

Nunez gives Fulham nightmares

Without the creativity of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, Liverpool are going to badly need Nunez over the coming weeks.

He isn’t perfect, but the Uruguayan is capable of creating chances on his own. Either via his movement opening up space for others, or simply by getting the ball and being direct, Darwin is always involved.

His absence was badly felt during the first-half tonight. Without some of their most creative players, Liverpool stodgy and short of ideas. Enter Darwin.

The 24-year-old ended the game having set up both of the Reds’ goals on the night. The second in particular was excellent, his perfect pull back presenting an easy finish for Cody Gakpo.

Nunez was also unlucky not to score. Bernd Leno made three saves from him, the most notable being a point-blank stop which came back off his legs.

But although it’s not quite going in for him at the moment, Darwin is still effecting things so positively for Liverpool.

There remains a slight question over his fitness. In an ideal world Jurgen Klopp would have been able to start Nunez this evening.

But after an intense workout at Arsenal on Sunday, maybe the manager just felt his No.9 needed protecting. Either way, it worked out brilliantly this evening.

Nunez has never been too far away from the headlines since arriving at Liverpool in 2022. But whatever you think of him, he is always involved. Tonight, that was the difference.
