Liverpool could be about to have a really big regret if they don’t sign £34m midfielder

Despite plenty of transfer links, Liverpool look unlikely to make any signings this month.

For a time, that hadn’t seemed like the scenario that would play out. Back in October and November, it appeared virtually certain that a move to bring in Andre Trindade from Fluminense would be solidified.

But with 10 days of the window already just about gone, Liverpool have seemingly distanced themselves from any such transfer.

In our opinion that was already a mistake. Available for around £34m, Andre wouldn’t break the bank and looks like a good bet for a long-term defensive midfield answer.

But today’s comments from South American football expert Tim Vickery have only entrenched our view further.

“It’s amazing to me that Andre is still playing for Fluminense in Brazil,” Vickery told Sky Sports. “Think of the Brazilian central midfielders doing well in the Premier League: Douglas Luiz, Joao Gomes, Danilo, Bruno Guimaraes – Andre might just be the best of the bunch.” Really, Liverpool?!

Liverpool repeating Bruno mistake

We understand why Liverpool may not wish to go in for Andre anymore. Wataru Endo was seemingly brought in when Fluminense rejected the Reds’ approach for their star man in the summer.

With Endo now doing really well having settled in, there’s perhaps no longer a need for another option.

Having said that though, Andre is eight years the Japanese’s junior. There’d be plenty of time for him to come in, adapt and then take over.

Liverpool also need only look at one of the examples Vickery gives for why they may regret not signing Andre when they have the chance.

Back before Bruno Guimaraes joined Newcastle for £40m in January 2022, the Reds were said to be interested in him. Journalist Melissa Reddy even told The Anfield Wrap this of the Brazilian back in August of the same year.

“If there was a blank canvas and Liverpool could sign anyone without any restrictions, so availability wasn’t an issue, the club he was at wasn’t an issue, all of those things, it would be Bruno from Newcastle. Somebody at City said similar. They can’t believe Newcastle got that deal.”

Since then, Liverpool have been rumoured to be still interested in Bruno. But with the Magpies reportedly demanding more than £100m for the 26-year-old, it’s now never going to happen.

Fortunately, in Andre, the Reds have had the chance to correct that mistake. Unfortunately though, it looks like they’re going to pass up the opportunity of buying a potentially even better player for an even better deal. When they’re quoted £150m for Andre in two years, they’ll be looking back on this moment and wondering what on earth they were thinking. Make it make sense!
