Jurgen Klopp has hinted that he was struggling with another fitness issue for Liverpool ahead of tonight’s game.

The Reds are currently missing a number of players as they try to navigate their way through four competitions. With Trent Alexander-Arnold the latest absentee, Klopp was already scraping the barrel for a team to put out against Fulham.

And according to the Liverpool manager, his selection was hampered further by the news that Darwin Nunez was unable to start the match.

“Darwin played really well in the last game [against Arsenal] but he had cramps so we don’t start him. That’s how it is,” Klopp revealed to beIN SPORTS.

Despite his inability to start, Nunez came on and made a real impact in the game. After setting up both of Liverpool’s two goals, the Reds boss declared himself satisfied with his No.9.

“He cannot start but he comes on and then he brings some dynamic,” Klopp praised.

Nunez struggling with cramp

With so many injuries impacting the squad, Liverpool really need to sort out whatever is going on with Nunez.

Tonight being his 30th appearance of the season, the Uruguayan is comfortably the Red with the highest number of outings in 2023/24 so far.

However, every two or three games he seems to come down with something that prevents him from starting.

Wednesday night was the perfect match for Nunez. Without the creative abilities of Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah, they needed his propensity to create chances from nothing.

But having maybe pushed a little too hard against Arsenal, Nunez had to come from the bench instead.

In the end, it wasn’t a problem. Darwin still had a massive impact on the game and was ultimately decisive in it.

Hopefully having only played 35 minutes, he saved his legs for when they’ll be needed next.

Moving forward though, it would be nice if Liverpool could count on Nunez with even more regularity. He’s getting out there on the pitch plenty enough, but being able to start more games would allow him to get into a better rhythm. Something to work on.
