Liverpool are thriving at the moment. The Reds are currently top of the Premier League and are still competing on all four fronts this season after knocking Arsenal out of the FA Cup last night.
No one would have envisaged such a bright start to life under Liverpool 2.0 for Jurgen Klopp at the beginning of the season. But Klopp’s new reloaded team has been brilliant so far. Especially when you put the Reds performances into context.
This season hasn’t come without challenges. Liverpool have had to fight contentious VAR decisions, a chaotic end of the transfer window and three international breaks in between.
On top of that, Klopp has also had to deal with several injury problems which have forced him to promote academy players and play players out of position. One of those has been Joe Gomez.
Joe Gomez on Klopp’s challenge
Gomez has been Liverpool’s best utility player so far this season. He’s played as a centre-back and as a right-back as well covering Trent Alexander-Arnold. Meanwhile, most recently, he has had to transition into a left-back after injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas.
It has been a change which Gomez himself has now admitted has come with challenges. Speaking as per the Liverpool ECHO, Gomez spoke about the transition to his new role.
“It’s different playing at left back. It’s been a challenge to adapt,” Gomez said.
“There are some small, minor differences that maybe aren’t noticed, maybe how you receive the ball and so on. But I’m just, people at the club know me now, they know I will give my all.”
Despite it being a challenge, Gomez certainly hasn’t shown it on the pitch. He’s been fantastic so far this season and has done very well even in the left-back position. Last night was a perfect example of that with Gomez completely eliminating Bukayo Saka’s impact from the game.
