Heurelho Gomes shares who he thinks is the better goalkeeper – Ederson or Alisson

Former Brazil international Heurelho Gomes has weighed in on the debate surrounding Liverpool’s Alisson Becker in his homeland.

Ever since his debut in 2015 Alisson has generally been the No.1 for Brazil. However, with Manchester City’s Ederson more or less the same age, that hasn’t always been straightforward.

Plenty of onlookers see the Liverpool ‘keeper as being the very best in the world. But Ederson has been the man between the sticks for Brazil in recent times.

Now, asked by Danny Murphy on TalkSPORT which goalie he prefers, former Tottenham Hotspur stopper Gomes has planted his flag firmly on the side of Ederson.

“It’s a difficult question,” mused the 42-year-old. “But I would go for Ederson, he’s more complete I believe.

“I’m telling you, both of them – Ederson and Alisson – they are top, top goalkeepers. But Ederson is more complete. His passes from the back, the way Man City play, they use him very well. Alisson is a bit more… I don’t know the word to compare, but I think Ederson is, not a better goalkeeper, but a more complete goalkeeper.”

Gomes backs Ederson over Alisson

Obviously, we’re biased in this debate and, as far as we can tell, Gomes is not. So, you have to give some credence to the former goalie’s view.

However, we simply cannot see how Ederson is a more complete goalkeeper than Liverpool’s No.1.

The Man City man is terrific with the ball at his feet, that is undeniable. He comfortably outperforms Alisson in this regard.

But in just about every other aspect, i.e. a ‘keepers’ actual job, we think Alisson wins out.

As a result, we’d say the argument Gomes uses is exactly the one that we’d use to crown our Brazilian goalie as the best one about. There isn’t a weakness in Alisson’s game, he’s brilliant at everything.

Obviously, the choice of who gets picked for Brazil is not a definitive answer to that. Different coaches play different ways and if you want to build up from the back, then there’s no one better than Ederson.

But having said that, Alisson can do it, too. If you’ve got a choice between Alisson and anyone else, then there is no choice. You pick the man once deemed ‘the Messi of goalkeepers’.

Gomes is entitled to his opinion, as are we all. But we’re not accepting this one.
