Dean Saunders says Liverpool have a ‘genius footballer’ in their team

Former Liverpool striker Dean Saunders has raved about one of the players in Jurgen Klopp’s squad.

Klopp has got Liverpol firing again in 2023/24. After a disappointing fifth placed finish last season, the Reds are back on top of the Premier League this time around.

Pretty much the whole team has been better than a year ago. Virgil van Dijk is a notable one who’s stepped up considerably, but another is Trent Alexander-Arnold.

This time last season Trent was getting constant criticism for failing to carry out his defensive duties. But one year on, and Saunders is singing the Scouser’s praises to TalkSPORT. The pundit placed Liverpool’s right-back in his Premier League Team of the Season so far.

“Right-back, I tried my best to get him into midfield because I think he’s brilliant, but I can’t leave him out the team, Trent at right-back,” Saunders explained.

“Struggles one-v-one out in the channel, sometimes switches off at the back post, but with the ball, outstanding. Just a genius footballer, he’s getting to the point where I’m going to call him a genius soon, he’s getting better.”

Alexander-Arnold the genuis

Genuis is actually a very good way to describe Alexander-Arnold. The 25-year-old is simply operating on another level at times.

Take his ridiculous shot that hit the post against Newcastle last night for example.

How many players would even see that shot from such a tight angle, let alone attempt to take it on. Trent did and was almost rewarded with an unbelievable goal.

Obviously that kind of incident is a bit of a one-off. But throughout near enough every game you watch Alexander-Arnold in, he’ll pull off something that makes your jaw drop.

Nine times out of ten it’s one of those perfect, swazzed balls from one side of the pitch to the other. His passing is just off the charts.

As Trent continues to push to be played more permanently in a midfield role, some of those passes are a reminder of what he can give you when playing deeper.

With more room ahead of him, Alexander-Arnold has licence to play whatever pass he wants. That is a real weapon for Liverpool.

As Saunders encapsulates here, some will always want to focus on the negatives where Trent is concerned. But from our point of view, the man truly is a genius of his craft. We’re so lucky to have him.
