Liverpool will have to pay over £10m to sign midfielder after summer approach

Liverpool will always keep an eye on the market and explore possible deals when a suitable opportunity arises. While, the club is not expected to be very active in the window, nothing can be ruled out at this stage.

After last summer’s chaotic window, Jurgen Klopp still has areas that he can improve in the squad. Even the midfield which was significantly reinforced still has some weak spots.

One player who could come up on Liverpool’s agenda again is Neil Dan. Last summer according to journalist Mike McGrath, Liverpool held an interested in signing the young Sunderland midfielder on deadline day.

The transfer never materialised but it seems like Liverpool may have retained an interest in Dan.

‘Technically gifted’ Neil Dan

Speaking to Football League World, ex England international Carlton Palmer waxed lyrical about Dan.

‘He’s having another fantastic season. The midfield player is reportedly happy to stay at Sunderland and wishes to help them return to the Premier League,’ Palmer said.

‘At 22, he’s technically gifted, he’s an English player as well; that satisfies the criteria of supplying home-grown talent for the big clubs.

‘I think Dan could make the step up to the Premier League, but we know Sunderland’s policy of developing young players and buying them at relatively low prices and then selling them on for big profit.’

Liverpool interest confirmed

Palmer also seemed to confirm Liverpool’s approach during the summer window last year, and added that the Reds were not the only Premier League club in the race.

‘Reports are suggesting Liverpool, Arsenal, and Spurs are interested, just to name a few Premier League clubs keen to win his signature.

‘Liverpool, in fact, made an enquiry in the summer without putting forward an offer.

‘Sunderland are in an incredibly strong position with the player. Neil’s contract does not expire until the summer of 2026.’

He then concluded that the Reds would have to pay over £10m in order to land the talented midfielder.

“I think it would take a huge offer for Sunderland to let Neil go in the January transfer window. I think you would be looking at in excess of £10 million.”

Even upwards of £10m is a relatively low fee to pay for a club of Liverpool’s stature. Undoubtedly, the Reds will have been tracking Dan’s progress this season. And if they deem him worthy enough of that transfer valuation, it would not be a surprise to see Jurgen Klopp’s side make a move.
