Liverpool know they’d have to pay big money to replace ‘underrated’ player amid interest

Liverpool are not interested in entertaining the possible sale of defender Joe Gomez.

Gomez has been linked with a surprise move to Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the January transfer window.

But with the 26-year-old now in excellent form for the Reds, The Times report that Jurgen Klopp has no desire to let Gomez leave.

The reported interest from Spurs isn’t mentioned directly in their piece from last night. Nevertheless, it is claimed that Liverpool know that recruiting a player with Gomez’s attributes would cost a ‘king’s ransom’.

The England international is said to be a ‘popular’ member of the squad who the Reds are seemingly keen to keep on board.

For his part, Gomez is also reportedly happy to stay at Liverpool. Klopp claimed that the defender is ‘Liverpool through and through’ only yesterday and The Times report that the former Charlton man is not pushing to leave.

Liverpool aware of Gomez value

Through all of the angst over Gomez’s poor form last season, it’s worth pointing out just how valuable he still is.

Still only 26, a seasoned and proven Premier League performer and capable of playing in a number of positions, Gomez would be a rare find in the market.

Steve McManaman recently claimed that Liverpool’s No.2 is ‘underrated’ in his propensity to play in a number of different positions. And we’d have to agree.

When Gomez plays at right or left-back, there’s obviously a drop-off from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson or even Kostas Tsimikas.

But in fairness to Joe, the gap has become less and less over time. This season in particular he has shown just how good he can be in both positions.

You just don’t find players like that, and if you’ve got one then you shouldn’t allow him to leave.

Thankfully, it sounds like all parties are on the same page where Gomez is concerned. The player is happy doing what he’s doing and the club are well aware in the value of that. Everybody wins.

It would be interesting to see how Liverpool would react if Spurs solidified their interest with a bid. But given all we’ve learnt with this insight, we can already assume the answer.
