‘Better than Endo’… TalkSPORT pundit says £45m Man City player would walk into Liverpool’s team

Liverpool could upgrade their midfield by attempting to bring in a player from Manchester City.

The Reds’ midfield has been subject to much scrutiny throughout the season so far. Having brought in four new players over the summer, there’s seemingly still room for one more.

With that in mind, Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign City squad player Kalvin Phillips.

And speaking on TalkSPORT today, former Reds striker Dean Saunders has claimed that Phillips would be an upgrade on current No.6 Wataru Endo.

“That’s a sought after position,” Saunders said, when asked which team the City midfielder should be looking to join. “Man United bought Casemiro to play in that position, he could get in that team. Would he get in Liverpool’s team? Probably. I think he’s better than Endo, if he’s playing every week.

“He’d get in Newcastle’s team. Would he get in Spurs’s team? You can only sit there for so long, it’s very difficult to earn more money somewhere else so he will be sitting there thinking I have to take a wage cut here. It’s about when you make that decision. Do I leave and play football or do I sit here on ridiculous wages?”

Liverpool told of Endo improvement

Right now, there’s no way that Liverpool would rather have Phillips in the team over Endo.

All things being equal, the £45m signing from Leeds United is probably a better player than Liverpool’s No.3. But as of this moment, Endo is the easy choice.

The Japan captain has been excellent of late. Having started each of the Reds last seven matches, he’s become a mainstay in the team.

Throughout that time, Endo has really grown in stature. Top performances against Manchester United and Arsenal were backed up with a Man of the Match display at Burnley on Tuesday.

Phillips meanwhile has played just 89 minutes across four Premier League games. With just two starts all season, the 28-year-old is a forgotten man at the Etihad.

That should change when the January window opens and he hopefully gets his move. But unless there’s a major turnaround, Phillips won’t be coming to Liverpool.

The Reds are set to be without Endo in January as he heads off to play in the Asian Cup. With Alexis Mac Allister due back from injury though, there’s no need to panic.

Phillips may yet reignite his career and show that Liverpool should have pushed to get him while they could. But for now, we’re happy with what we have thank you very much.
