Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is closing in on a return to fitness.
Mac Allister has missed the last six games for Liverpool having gone down with a knee injury against Sheffield United earlier in the month.
In his absence the Reds have moved to the top of the Premier League table. With Wataru Endo filling in, Liverpool’s title charge has been sustained. But still, with Endo soon heading away for the Asian Cup, Jurgen Klopp could really do with Mac Allister back.
Thankfully, according to The Times, the 25-year-old could well be available for Monday’s visit of Newcastle United.
They claim that Mac Allister is expected to be back ‘around the time’ that Newcastle visit Anfield on New Years Day.
With just five days between now and then, we’ll expect to see some more precise updates between now and the weekend.
Mac Allister closing in on return
This is superb news for Liverpool. Having initially expected Mac Allister to miss just a game or two, his recovery has taken a little longer than first predicted.
And although Endo has really done superbly well as the Reds holding midfielder, you can’t help but wonder if Liverpool would have beaten Manchester United or Arsenal with the Argentine in the side.
They may not have done, of course. And it should also be said that Endo was very good in both of those games.
But against United in particular, Liverpool could have done with the extra creativity that Mac Allister brings.

That would also be helpful against Newcastle, who may aim to sit in and frustrate the Reds following a poor run of form.
With Endo having played for seven games straight now, it would also be good to give the Japan captain a rest on Monday. Whether or not that’s possible will likely be determined over the next 48 hours or so.
But one thing’s for sure: Liverpool badly need Macca to be fit for the time Endo is away.
Fortunately, unless anything unforeseen pops up, it sounds as though Klopp will be able to rely on his World Cup winner for that period. Let’s hope for another positive update soon.
