Liverpool are reportedly stepping up their plans for the January transfer window.
With on-field duties now concluded for 2023, attention is starting to turn towards potential additions to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
Today, reports have named one such possible new arrival as Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson. 90min have even claimed that the Reds’ have already been in contact with the Cottagers over the transfer.
Obviously, left-back is currently a position which Klopp is a little light in. With Andy Robertson not expected back for a month or so and Kostas Tsimikas out with a fractured collar-bone, Liverpool are currently using Joe Gomez as emergency cover.
However, with Gomez doing well so far and the schedule now easing up a little, most fans would say they’d be happy to wait for Robertson to be back. No need to dip into the transfer market.
But with rumours suggesting that Liverpool are very much planning to add another body, perhaps things are worse than first feared.
Liverpool wary of Tsimikas lay-off
As of yet, there has been no official prognosis for Tsimikas’ injury. No timeframe at all has been given. That’s never usually a good sign with these kinds of fitness problems.
Obviously, if Tsimikas is out for the season – or longer – then perhaps Liverpool do need to reasses.
Gomez is okay for the odd game as cover. But Klopp won’t really want to get used to playing a right-footed full-back behind a right-footed winger on the left. It changes the whole makeup of the team.
There’s other factors to consider with Gomez, too. The 26-year-old is also currently Liverpool’s first-choice left-back, second-choice right-back and third-choice centre-back. He’s being spread a little thin.

If something were to happen to Joe – and he doesn’t have the best injury history – the Reds would be in trouble in a number of positions.
One way to remedy this would be to bring in another central defender. That is reportedly something Liverpool may be doing as well. But the best solution if Tsimikas really is out for a long time would surely be to get another left-back.
In our opinion, that perhaps shouldn’t be someone like Robinson. At 26, the Fulham man could not really be seen as a long-term Robertson successor. Ideally, it would be a younger player who could play back-up until Tsimikas returns, before morphing into the first choice outright over time.
Quite who that player is, we’re not sure. But rumours of Robinson’s arrival should spark some concern over the true severity of Tsimikas’ issue. Get well soon, Kostas.
