Jamie Carragher suggests 23-year-old Liverpool player reminded him of Cristiano Ronaldo vs West Ham

Liverpool were much, much better against West Ham United in the Carabao Cup this evening.

After a disappointing performance against Manchester United on Sunday, the Reds looked more like themselves right from the start against the Hammers.

This was punctuated by a brilliant first-half goal from Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian has been under-pressure of late after some ineffectual performances. But after he swept a lovely goal past Alphonse Areola, Jamie Carragher made a lofty comparison whilst commentating for Sky Sports.

“Liverpool have deserved that and we have seen it once before in this competition at the Kop end against Leicester and we have seen it again now,” said the Reds legend.

“West Ham have been poor and this sums them up. A great chance to counter attack [but they give it away] and then Ben Johnson on the far side just seems to stand off, maybe he isn’t aware of Szoboszlai and the strength that he has got.

“He just finds that far corner. Just look at that, you see that movement, it’s almost Cristiano Ronaldo-esque the way he hits the ball.”

Szoboszlai scores a stunner

After a disappointing run of late, this was the perfect way for Szoboszlai to answer his critics. It really was a lovely goal.

Just a few months into his Liverpool career, we’ve already seen a number of top quality strikes from the 23-year-old.

It perhaps wasn’t as bombastic as his goal in this same competition against Leicester. But this one was as elegant a goal as you can get.

Carragher makes the perfect comparison, too. We’re obviously not the biggest fans of Ronaldo, but my word could he hit a ball.

The way Szoboszlai struck tonight’s effort with a slightly pulled foot was indeed reminiscent of the Portuguese’s famed old free-kick technique. Great to see.

More than the goal though, it was just brilliant to see Szoboszlai back in form.

It wasn’t perfect and he does still seem to lack a slight bit of focus sometimes. But by and large this was so much better from our No.8.

His engine is genuinely ridiculous and the way he pressed and hassled the West Ham players was exactly what we want to see from him. A performance and a goal to really savour for Dom. Keep it up, lad!
