Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijdners has said Alexis Mac Allister will be out through injury until the start of 2024 at the earliest.

The Argentine midfielder suffered an injury in Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Sheffield United, a blow that Jurgen Klopp claimed he had never seen before in his career.

As a result, Mac Allister has been out on the treatment table ever since, with the midfielder now expected to be out until the start of the new year, when Liverpool play Newcastle United on January 1st.

Speaking to the press, Lijnders said when asked about Mac Allister’s potential return from injury: “He will be out until the New Year. He could play January 1st, but let’s see.”

With Liverpool playing as poorly as they have done in recent fixtures against Crystal Palace and Manchester United, the 24-year-old’s absence has been massively felt.

And ahead of Arsenal on Saturday, Mac Allister being out through injury could prove to be massive for Liverpool in their bid to win the Premier League title.

Lauded by Harvey Elliott as ‘unbelievable’, Mac Allister’s injury has shone some light on how important the midfielder’s role for Liverpool now is since signing in the summer from Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Reds’ midfield has never looked as unbalanced as it does right now, and Liverpool will want Mac Allister to return to action as soon as possible.

And a potential comeback in 2024 seems far too long for the Reds, with Mac Allister set to miss a number of key games for Liverpool.

Indeed, the Argentine will be a big miss for the Reds, and Liverpool will hope they can weather this storm in the coming weeks without Mac Allister’s influence.
