Jarell Quansah shares why he didn’t celebrate his first ever Liverpool goal against Union Saint-Gilloise

Jarell Quansah has explained the reason behind his muted celebration after scoring for Liverpool last night.

Quansah continued his excellent season with another Man of the Match display during the Reds’ 2-1 loss against Union Saint-Gilloise.

As well as putting in a commanding display at the back, the 20-year-old was the only Liverpool player to find the target. It was a great goal too, his touch and blasted finish from Curtis Jones’ corner reminiscent of a couple scored by Martin Skrtel in the past.

After scoring a first ever senior goal, you might have expected Quansah to go a little mad. But instead, the centre-back simply turned to run and get back in position, before being mobbed by his teammates.

And speaking to LFCTV after the game, Jarell explained why he wasn’t ‘too happy’ even after bagging the equaliser on the night.

“Probably didn’t see a celebration did you?” smiled the youngster. “You never know nowadays what can get given. Because we’d already conceded a goal I wasn’t too happy myself. So it was more of a ‘get one back.’ not a ‘oh, I’ve just scored!’. It was a consolation for the one we conceded which is my job to do – not concede – and I’ll look at that back and pick it apart.”

Quansah shows elite mentality

To make it through a top academy and break into a big team you obviously need a heck of a lot of talent. But even more than that, you need to have the mentality to match.

How many times do we hear of quality young players coming through who simply either fail to break into the first-team, or get in but don’t perform.

Others let things go to their head, and start letting the ‘big time Charlie’ gene take over. But not Quansah.

In truth, we absolutely loved his answer here. We also loved another part of his post-match interview, where he admitted that he had always intended to ‘get over’ the injured Joel Matip this season.

The England U21 international is clearly someone well-equipped to make it at this level. He isn’t getting carried away, but he has that winners mentality, as well as a steely confidence in his own ability.

Obviously, working alongside the likes of Virgil van Dijk and a number of other Liverpool players will help develop that, too.

It’s been a little while since we were quite so impressed by an academy graduate. But Quansah is so far ticking more and more boxes every time he plays.

Clearly, you don’t want to place too much burden on the young man’s shoulders. However, with 12 Liverpool appearances under his belt and now a first Reds goal, Quansah now feels like a genuine first-teamer at Anfield.
