James Milner’s wordless reaction after what Mo Salah posted on Instagram yesterday

Former Liverpool midfielder James Milner has applauded Mohamed Salah’s latest landmark goal.

Salah hit his 200th strike in a Liverpool shirt at the weekend, bagging a crucial goal to bring the Reds level against Crystal Palace.

Following the game, Jurgen Klopp spoke of how the Liverpool squad presented Mo with a commemorative shirt in the dressing room.

And on Salah’s Instagram page yesterday, the Egyptian shared a picture of himself holding that very shirt aloft, with the rest of the Reds team behind him.

Of course, there are plenty of people who helped Mo reach that number who are no longer at the club. One of them is Milner, who spent six years as the 31-year-old’s teammate at Anfield.

And the now Brighton man couldn’t let the chance pass to show his appreciation to a Liverpool legend. Adding an applauding emoji, a heart emoji and a fire emoji, Milner sent his silent congratulations to Salah.

When players move on from football clubs, it can be easy for supporters to move on quickly, too.

Fans would now perhaps rather see the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai or Ryan Gravenberch than players like Milner or Jordan Henderson.

Indeed, one of Liverpool’s new recruits – Alexis Mac Allistermissed the photo opportunity, and that was a bit of a disappointment.

But it should always be remembered that many more people played parts in Salah’s story at Liverpool than were on that shot yesterday.

Over the summer, the Reds lost a number of players who contributed massively to creating the No.11’s legacy at Anfield.

Out of sight but not out of mind, their roles should not be forgotten simply because they’re no longer here.

In fact, of Salah’s 200 goals for Liverpool, no one set up more than Roberto Firmino. That the Brazilian wasn’t there to celebrate with his buddy is real shame. But that’s football.

Milner’s part in Mo’s double century is certainly less pronounced. But as Klopp has often said, the Reds wouldn’t have won what they won without the 37-year-old’s influence. By that logic, the same probably applies to Salah and his 200 up. Real recognise real.
