Liverpool reportedly did not want to pay £40m to sign Mason Mount this summer, who ended up at Manchester United.

The England international was at the centre of a transfer battle during the window which saw Liverpool and the Red Devils battle it out for Mount, who was keen to leave Chelsea.

Yet as reported by the Athletic, the Reds were simply unwilling to match the west London side’s demands for the 24-year-old, with United winning the race for Mount.

With zero goals in all competitions this season, the transfer has been nothing short of a disaster so far for the new United no. 7, with Liverpool instead splashing out £60m on Dominik Szoboszlai.

With numerous pundits naming the Hungarian as the signing of the summer, Liverpool did the right thing in abandoning their plan to bring Mount to Anfield in the off-season.

And for the United playmaker, he could be regretting his decision to favour a move to Old Trafford, especially with how well Szoboszlai is now performing under Jurgen Klopp.

Everyone and their mother knew that Liverpool would have been the perfect next destination for Mount, especially when compared to the mess that’s currently going on at United.

And some months since the transfer, Mount could now be wishing he chose a move to Anfield rather than Old Trafford, where things just aren’t going well for the England international.

There’s a real chance that the midfielder could miss out on a spot in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad, with Mount looking like a shadow of his former self.

Indeed, Klopp and Liverpool were a match made in heaven for Mount, yet with Chelsea’s demands too high and the playmaker setting his mind on United, a transfer never looked likely.
