Wataru Endo says £35m Liverpool player just keeps on getting better

Wataru Endo has said Alexis Mac Allister is improving with each passing game when playing as Liverpool’s holding midfielder.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Japanese international highlighted how his fellow midfield teammate is taking on his new role as Liverpool’s deepest player in the centre-three.

Mac Allister joined Liverpool this summer from Brighton & Hove Albion for £35m in a deal that many considered to be one of the best of the entire window.

However, the 24-year-old has been deployed by Jurgen Klopp in a more defensive role, something Endo now thinks Mac Allister is starting to grasp after numerous games in the position.

The former VfB Stuttgart captain said: “Macca is more offensive, but defensively he always tries to make it better. As he keeps playing, he gets very strong defensively.

“Also, I can learn a lot of things from him and I think it’s a good balance between me and Macca. He is still young, but he has already won the World Cup and has a very good mentality.”

Endo could soon replace Mac Allister in Liverpool’s XI

Mac Allister’s time at Liverpool has been strange, to say the least, with the attacking midfielder being deployed as the lone six in a midfield three under Klopp.

With the Argentine clearly better-suited playing in an advanced role, it makes little sense why the Liverpool manager continues to experiment with Mac Allister in this position.

Moreover, with Endo waiting in the wings as a natural defensive midfielder, it might not be long until the former Bundesliga star replaces Mac Allister in the starting XI.

Indeed, such a move would be a dramatic one for Liverpool, yet it could be needed if Mac Allister still can’t perform the role to a world-class level.
