Former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland was left ‘gobsmacked’ after watching Jurgen Klopp’s team in training.
Kirkland arguably never quite fulfilled his potential whilst at Liverpool. Nevertheless, the 42-year-old can still look back with pride having made 45 appearances for his boyhood club.
The one-cap England goalie was one of several players Liverpool tried out in net during the early 2000’s, as they failed to nail the position down. These days, the situation with the Reds No.1 shirt could hardly be more different, Alisson Becker reigns supreme. And speaking to The Redmen TV today, Kirkland says that having watched Alisson in training, he can see exactly why.
“He is awesome, in the simplest way,” raved the former Red. “I get asked about him all the time obviously. I’ve been down there, watched him train, and my word, I come away gobsmacked. I know we see it in games but you train the way you play, you play the way you train and training, I just couldn’t believe what I was watching.
“People say ‘why, well what makes him stand out?’ Well he makes the easy things look easy and the hard things look easy. And that’s the biggest compliment I can pay him. He’s just no fuss. [It’s] massive the amount of saves he makes, contribution he makes, his presence, we’re very, very lucky to have him.
“We’ve had some brilliant goalkeepers over the years, Clem [Ray Clemence] and Bruce [Grobbelaar], but if Ali keeps going the way he’s going he’s certainly going to push them for the all-time best.”
Liverpool lucky to have Alisson
Ever since Alisson signed for Liverpool more than five years ago, fans have been made to feel lucky.
The Brazilian announced himself as one of the very best in the world very early on into his Reds career and has never looked back.
But now, or at least over the past 18 months or so, Alisson seems to have gone up another level. These days, ask any Liverpool supporter about their goalkeeper, and they’ll have nothing put wholly positive things to say.
It isn’t just that Ali is a top goalkeeper either. As a presence, as a teammate, as a man. The 31-year-old is just superb across the board.

We were given another reminder of this only yesterday. Coming face-to-face with Liverpool colleague Luis Diaz as Colombia took on Brazil, Alisson was beaten twice by the Reds No.7 in a painful loss for his country.
But having seen Diaz go through the torment of having his father kidnapped recently, Alisson gave him a huge hug and words of support at the full-time whistle. He’s a special guy.
So not only are we lucky to have the former Roma man on the pitch, but off it as well.
With more than three years still to run on his contract at Anfield, Alisson seems set to stay at Liverpool for a long time yet. If he can keep this level up for at least some of that period, he’s going down as the best to ever do it. No questions asked. What a player, and what a thing for Kirkland to witness.
