Liverpool have an opportunity to land a blow to Manchester City in the transfer market and they simply have to take it.
The Reds look set to go head-to-head with City for the Premier League title this season, with a huge game coming up at the Eithad in just over a week’s time.
But if German journalist Christian Falk is to be believed, then the two clubs will battle it out off the pitch too. Writing on X today, Falk claimed that Liverpool and City are both trying to sign Bayern Munich’s Leroy Sane.
“Manchester City is like Liverpool interested in a Transfer of Leroy Sane in Summer 2024,” reports the journalist.
This comes after several weeks of the Reds being linked with a move for the 27-year-old. If they really do see Sane as the perfect replacement for Mohamed Salah, then they have to stand firm.
City and Liverpool target Sane
Of course, we’ve already seen what Sane can do when let loose by Pep Guardiola. He wasn’t always perfect during his four years at City, but the German was always, always dangerous.
Sane also seemed to have a habit of scoring against Liverpool. The forward bagged four times in the eight appearances he made versus the Reds.
One particularly crucial goal came in the 2-1 loss at the Etihad which ultimately decided the 2018/19 title race. Sane got the winner that day. Liverpool won’t want to be facing him again.
Since then, the Germany international has seemingly become even more accomplished, too. With nine goals and seven assists so far this season, he’s been on fire for Bayern. This has led to praise from none other than Harry Kane, who raved about his teammate earlier this week.
“He has great pace and outstanding power,” gushed the England captain. “Leroy is probably our best player so far this season. He is fantastic.”

If Liverpool fail to put up a fight and allow Sane to head back to the club he left for £55m in 2020, they should be prepared for what happens next.
Of course, there is another option here: that the Bayern man signs a new deal to stay at his current club beyond his current 2025 expiry. And according to a follow-up from Falk on X, that seems like a real possibility.
“Christoph Freund, Head of Sports at FC Bayern, will start negotiations about a new contract for Leroy Sane with his Agent Fali Ramadani after the international break,” says the journalist.
If those talks go smoothly, then Liverpool will move on to other targets. If they don’t, then they’ve simply got to somehow get ahead of City. Listen to Harry!
