Jermaine Pennant has advised Liverpool on who they should sign if Mohamed Salah leaves the club next summer.
Salah’s future is currently very much in the balance. Although the Egyptian continues to be a key player for Liverpool, the interest from Saudi Arabia in him is going to be difficult to hold off. As a result, the Reds may find themselves having to replace the irreplaceable.
Asked by Mirror Football who should hypothetically be the man tasked with stepping into Salah’s boots, former Red Pennant opted for a face familiar to English audiences.
“Where can you go, there’s not many if any people that could replace Mo Salah,” began the pundit. “There’s talk of Leroy Sane at Bayern Munich, he’s really a good player.
“He was great at Man City and when he left Man City that was a big eyebrow raiser and he’s gone to Bayern Munich and doing the same there.
“Cuts off the left flank like Mo, he’s pacy, can score goals. So that wouldn’t be a bad shout and I’m sure you’d get him for half the price for what you’d sell to Saudi Arabia, so a little bit more money in the bank as well.”
Pennant names his Salah replacement
As Pennant mentions, there has indeed been talk of Sane coming to Liverpool in the near future.
Just like Mo, the Bayern man is coming up to the last year of his contract. With talks seemingly at a bit of a stand-still with the German giants, Sane has been linked with Liverpool.
All things considered, that would represent the Reds very much landing on their feet.
At 28, he may be a little older than the type of signings Liverpool usually make. But Sane – who cost Bayern £55m in 2020 – is already the finished article.

There would – in theory – be no need for Jurgen Klopp to wait for him to come good. Sane should already be used to the Premier League and the demands expected from him being at a top club.
The down sides are obviously his relatively patchy injury history, as well as the fact that he wouldn’t be a long-term solution.
But should Liverpool lose Salah, there aren’t many – if any – players who could immediately soften the blow. As they search for Mo’s longer-term heir, Sane would be one who is perhaps capable of doing just that.
