David Ornstein shares what he knows about Liverpool’s move to sign Andre from Fluminense

It’s not yet clear whether Liverpool will follow up their interest in Andre Trindade in January.

The Reds have been constantly linked with a move for Andre ever since the summer. However, having once looked like clear favourites to sign the Fluminense man, reports this week have suggested that Fulham are now in pole position.

So, with confusion reigning, fans have now turned to journalist and transfer oracle David Ornstein to clear things up. Answering a question about Andre and Liverpool during a Q&A with The Athletic, Ornstein shared what he knows.

“I get asked about Andre on here more than anyone or anything else!” he replied. “It seems there has been some level of interest in him but I don’t have any information to suggest it is a deal Liverpool are planning to do.

“I’m not sure it will be a busy January at Anfield — they look competitive and don’t seem to need much — but we have learned that they are always alert and often spring a surprise.”

Andre move not imminent

For the time being, Ornstein’s information would seem to chime with what has been reported elsewhere: Liverpool are unlikely to move for Andre.

That will disappoint plenty of fans, who have almost become honorary Fluminense supporters over the past months.

But as the journalist points out, you can’t count the Reds out just yet. They have often surprised in the transfer market and could do so again.

Despite Ornstein’s suggestion that Liverpool ‘don’t seem to need much,’ what they do clearly require is a top quality defensive midfielder.

This is not a surprise, and should be something the Reds are working on behind the scenes. If Andre is deemed not to be that guy for Liverpool, then someone else needs to be.

Yesterday, there were some suggestions that Argentinos Juniors midfielder Federico Redondo could be an alternative.

Let’s see if that develops into anything more concrete.

With more than six weeks to go until the transfer window opens, there’s still time for Liverpool to be finalising their plans. But it will creep up quickly, it would be nice to be prepared.

We don’t think we’ve heard the last of Andre to Liverpool links. For the moment, all the signs seem to suggest that he won’t be arriving at Anfield, though. So, if you’re keen on the 22-year-old, we’d suggest not to get your hopes up too high.
