Fabrizio Romano says there are some false rumours being spread about Liverpool now

Liverpool are not in negotiations to sign Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City.

The Reds have been heavily linked with Phillips, and could reportedly move to sign him in the January transfer window.

Reports yesterday suggested that Liverpool are actually in the top three contenders to sign the 27-year-old in the New Year.

However, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Reds have made no decision about Phillips. Writing in his Daily Briefing this morning, Romano rebuked rumours that the Yorkshireman is heading to Anfield.

“As previously mentioned, it’s looking increasingly likely for Kalvin Phillips to leave Manchester City this January,” began the transfer expert.

“But I’m not aware of any negotiation with Liverpool at this stage, despite what’s been reported elsewhere.

“It’s very quiet around Liverpool as of now, no decision will be made in October for their transfer plans in the January window – it will be decided later this year.”

Liverpool taking time over Phillips

It’s quite right that Liverpool should wait and see what happens before making any commitments for January. There’s still a lot of football left to play between now and then.

Besides, it seems inevitable that nothing will change as far as Phillips is concerned. He’s set to be available either on loan, or perhaps permanently.

Of course, if Liverpool really do want to bring the former Leeds United man in, then they can’t wait forever.

Phillips reportedly has plenty of suitors both in England and in Europe. If the Reds hesitate too long, they’ll miss out on him.

They’ll know that, though. And knowing the way Liverpool do their business, if Phillips was a top priority, they’d move quickly to cut off their competitors.

For the time being, there’s no need to move quite so decisively.

The Reds could do with someone like Phillips bringing in for the second half of the season, sure. But with Alexis Mac Allister still doing fine, they don’t have to be desperate. Plenty of time to assess and re-asses. Maybe it’d be good to ignore this one for now.
