Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool player has suffered injury set-back, will miss Spurs game

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Stefan Bajcetic has suffered a minor injury setback.

Bajcetic returned to the team last week having been missing since March. But having not been spotted in training yesterday, the 18-year-old looks set for another spell on the side lines.

Klopp confirmed as much when speaking in his pre-Tottenham Hotspur press conference this morning.

“Stefan had a little, little, little, little setback,” said the Liverpool manager. “The problem is we have to be really careful. It’s a tiny calf issue, that’s how it is when you’re six months out.

“It’s disappointing for him and for us as well, but he got another one, we have to take him out a bit. Thiago [Alcantara] is still out, Conor [Bradley] still out. I think that’s it.”

Bajcetic suffers setback

Whilst disappointing news for Bajcetic, his injury setback does once again highlight just how careful Liverpool need to be here.

The Spaniard is undoubtedly one of the best prospects in European football right now. But he’s not good to the Reds if he’s never fit.

By giving Bajcetic an extended period to recover from his lengthy issue earlier in the year, Liverpool are hopefully elongating his career.

By the sounds of things, the new problem isn’t one that should keep the Spain U21 international out for long. But the Reds should add a couple of weeks on top of that to avoid aggravating anything further.

Once that recovery is done, hopefully Bajcetic can then put these issues behind him for good.

From a footballing point of view, it’s very unlikely that the teenager would have played against Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow anyway. However, there’s a decent chance that he’d have played in midweek against Union Saint-Gilloise.

So, as Jurgen says, disappointing and frustrating for Stefan and for fans wishing to see him in action. He’ll be back though, and he’ll be better for the recovery time.
