Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe has confirmed that Calvin Ramsay is almost ready to return on-loan from Liverpool.
Ramsay had a nightmare start to his temporary stay at Deepdale, picking up a knock before playing a competitive game for North End. But speaking to the Lancashire Evening Post today, Lowe has relayed some ‘good news’ from Liverpool.
“We’ve had some good news on Calvin,” said the manager. “He is at the back stage of his rehab now. We are in discussions with Liverpool and hopefully he’ll be back with us in the next couple of weeks. We are not going to rush him back but if we can get him back in the building with us in the next couple of weeks, we will.

“Once he’s at the end stage of rehab and passed all the protocols, ticked all the boxes, he’ll then be with us. I haven’t got a definite date just yet, just that we’ve had some conversations with them in the last few days and it is looking promising. He just had a reoccurrence in his knee; a bit of a setback but nothing major.
“I think it was the right thing that Liverpool brought him back to strengthen him up and make sure he’s right.
“I have spoken to Calvin numerous times and he can’t wait to get back going. He was supporting the lads at the Birmingham match and had pre-match with them, so we need to make sure we keep him involved and around the boys. Now, when he does come back, he’ll come back fitter and stronger than he was.
“I think it was probably too soon for him to come to us, because he was champing at the bit to get out and stamp his authority down. There is no disgrace in that, trying to get into a new club and perform. He is still a quality player who will definitely help us when he’s back.”
Ramsay ready for return
Although it sounds like Ramsay’s return is not immediately imminent, that is perhaps a good thing.
It would be great to see the 20-year-old back out on the pitch straight away, but it’s also really important that Preston and Liverpool handle him properly.
As Lowe points out, it seems as though Ramsay was slightly rushed back following surgery during the summer. Having missed pretty much all of last season, you can understand the Scotland international wanting to get going as soon as possible.

But in retrospect, maybe Calvin just needed a little extra time to put the injury behind him.
Once he does, there’s no question that he’s going to be an asset for Preston. Liverpool initially signed the right-back to slot immediately into the first team as back-up for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Had Ramsay not been injured, you’d imagine he’d now be filling that role this season, too.
With so much football missed in the past year-and-a-bit though, patience will likely be required. But with most of the season still left to play, there’s plenty of time for Ramsay to reintegrate and show the best of himself.
If he’s injured, he obviously can’t do that. Those extra few weeks of rehab will be worth it in the long run. Keep going, Calvin!
