Liverpool’s failed pursuit of wantaway Southampton star Romeo Lavia has been highly publicised in recent days following the Belgian’s decision to sign for Chelsea over the Reds, but that might not have been the case had Jurgen Klopp’s men treated the transfer saga differently.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool’s flirtation with Moises Caicedo, who also opted for the Blues, may have cost them in their hunt for Lavia’s signature.

Sources close to the youngster have revealed that he was left feeling like a “second choice”, which could have ultimately led to his choice being a Stamford Bridge switch.

Journalist Dharmesh Sheth revealed today that the 19-year-old has completed his medical for Mauricio Pochettino’s side with a formal announcement expected soon.

Lavia had been a longstanding target for Klopp’s side, so missing out on him will have undoubtedly been a big blow to his plans for the season. However, if reports are anything to go by then the Reds are not short of alternatives in their search for a holding midfielder.

If not Lavia, then who?

In recent days there have been as many as six players heavily linked to Liverpool, alongside the proposed signing of Wataru Endo who is set for his medical at the club today, that would fit the role required.

Those in question: Andre Trindade, Joao Palhinha, Cheick Doucoure, Ryan Gravenberch, Manu Kone and Sofyan Amrabat.

The Reds have made no secret of their desire for a defensive midfielder, but time is now ticking with the transfer window drawing to a close in less than a fortnight.

It is crucial for Klopp to fill the gap left by Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, who departed for Al-Ettifaq and Al-Ittihad respectively, and the list of options is seemingly increasing by the day.

It remains to be seen who will join Endo as a new recruit in the middle of the park, but it is certainly set to be a hectic period at Anfield as the club rush to secure a new addition this summer.
