Chelsea have been in touch with Moises Caicedo to offer improved terms, after Brighton accepted an offer from Liverpool.

The Reds look set to sign the Ecuador international having agreed to a deal with the Seagulls. But Caicedo has always been said to be favouring a move to Chelsea.

This is something backed up by Sky Sports journalist Dharmesh Sheth this morning, who claims on Twitter that Caicedo is having ‘second thoughts’ about moving to Liverpool.

“Told Moises Caicedo having second thoughts about Liverpool move,” says the journalist. “Player & representatives still in London. No official word Chelsea have returned.”

Also weighing in is journalist Chris Williams. Like Sheth, Williams took to Twitter to report what he’s hearing from the player’s representatives right now.

“Caicedo representatives confirm as far as they are aware Brighton have closed the deal and accepted Liverpool’s offer,” he reports.

“But Chelsea have this morning presented an improved package to the player, and have contacted Brighton about new terms.”

Caicedo digs his heels in

This is about to get complicated. There have been reports that Chelsea are preparing to come back to Brighton with an improved offer for Caceido.

If they do, and the player himself wants to join, then there surely won’t be a whole lot Liverpool can do.

Brighton can stand firm on their Thursday deadline for bids, but if Caicedo digs his heels in, then we all know what will happen.

The 21-year-old has already shown himself not above making a public show to get what he wants from his club. Do it again at this late stage of the window, and Chelsea will likely get their man.

Obviously, this is bad news for Liverpool. But if Caicedo truly wants to go to Chelsea and not the Reds, then he should.

It’s tough enough that Liverpool are having to spend a British transfer record on him. You do not pay that kind of money on a player who doesn’t want to be there. End of story.

The way this is playing out is a little unsightly for Chelsea, Liverpool, Brighton and Caicedo. It needs to get sorted one way or another before it starts getting truly ugly.
