Liverpool want ‘fantastic’ PL player, Steven Gerrard says he has absolutely ‘huge potential’

Liverpool have added Aston Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara to their midfield shortlist this summer.

The Reds are looking at a number of targets as they look to replace the Saudi Arabia-bound Fabinho. Adding Cheick Doucoure’s name to that list of options today, The Athletic also stuck Kamara down as being one to watch.

It seems Doucoure may possibly be the primary target, with Crystal Palace looking for around £50m to sell the Malian.

However, The Athletic also note down five further names of interest to Liverpool. Four of them are players who we’ve already seen linked over the past week or more: Romeo Lavia, Kalvin Phillips, Ryan Gravenberch and Sofyan Amrabat.

The odd one out is Kamara, who is seemingly a new target.

Let’s see if Liverpool take things further with any of the six mentioned here.

Kamara now on Liverpool’s shortlist

Of the six names put forward, Kamara is possibly the most exciting, Lavia aside. In our opinion, Cheick Doucoure would be a really good addition, but Kamara is a cut above.

The Villa midfielder recently earned himself a France national team call-up for his displays in the Premier League last season. Having already played 170 times for Marseille by the age of 22, he’s been around the block a bit already.

It’s no wonder then, that Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was so gushing about Kamara after signing him last summer. Speaking to avfc.co.uk at the time, Gerrard praised the 23-year-old’s ‘huge potential.’

“We’re really happy with that news, I think we’ve signed a fantastic player with huge potential,” said the former Villa boss. “This is a player who has played a lot of football at the highest level and has recently been called up to the national team on his recent performances.”

Given his high potential and indeed current ability, it’s hard to see Villa letting him go without a fight.

Unai Emery’s side are making some interesting signings in the transfer market and look ready to try for a top-four battle next season. Upwardly mobile, you can see them demanding a massive fee to sell to a perceived rival.

So, as good as Kamara may be, we’d still choose Doucoure from this list. If we’re being greedy we’d take Doucoure and Lavia. But should it be the Frenchman who is brought in, we wouldn’t be complaining too much.
