Club president may happily give Liverpool a discount to help them sign 23-year-old defender

Torino president Urbano Cairo is ready to give a small discount on his £34m asking-price for Liverpool target Perr Schuurs.

Schuurs has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield this summer, with the Italian press pushing the story. Earlier today, Tuttosport reported that the Dutch defender is currently leaning towards joining Liverpool.

And now, Calciomercato have added a little more meat on the bones of the saga. They claim that the Reds are indeed one of the teams in the running to sign Schuurs. Crystal Palace, West Ham United and Napoli are the other three.

So far, it looks as though West Ham are the team pushing hardest to sign the 23-year-old. The Hammers have reportedly already been trying to open negotiations with Torino and are willing to include Nikola Vlasic in any deal.

But it seems that the Turin side are in no great hurry to proceed. They are claimed to be happy to keep Schuurs for another season and as a result have put a £34m valuation on his head.

However, there is reportedly the chance that Cairo would be open to applying a ‘discount’ to keep interest in the Dutchman alive. This would supposedly be only shaving a little off the price though, with Torino definitively unwilling to go below £30m.

Liverpool in the race for Schuurs

On the face of it, it’s hard to see why Liverpool would really need a discount on Schuurs. Of the four clubs mentioned here, they’re easily the one with the deepest pockets.

As they look for a new player to bring into their back line, £30-34m isn’t a bad price to pay at all.

But whatever the price for Schuurs ends up being, we just don’t see Liverpool getting involved here.

It has been reported that the Reds are very much looking for a left-footed centre-back should they add a defender to their squad this summer.

Players like Levi Colwill and Goncalo Inacio have been linked and both of those would look like excellent options. Given that Inacio has a release clause of similar value to Schuurs’ asking price, the Sporting man would feel like a more likely candidate.

That isn’t to say that Schuurs wouldn’t be a good fit. In general, the Netherlands U21 international would add better depth to the Liverpool squad.

But he isn’t left-footed. So, for the time being we’re treating these links with a little suspicion. Discount or no discount.
