Steven Gerrard is reportedly still pushing to sign Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson for Saudi Arabia side Al-Ettifaq.

According to L’Equipe, the Anfield legend is keen to use his contacts in Europe and England to recruit for his new team, with Henderson still a top target for Gerrard after reports last week suggested that the former Liverpool skipper is keen on the 32-year-old.

With Henderson Liverpool’s captain and a regular for Jurgen Klopp’s side last season, the odds on the midfielder making the switch to Saudi Arabia to sign for Gerrard’s side are next-to-zero, even with the England international approaching the twilight years of his career.

Signed from Sunderland for £20m in 2011, Henderson being sold this summer to Al-Ettifaq to play under Gerrard would be quite the shock, with the Liverpool legend also reportedly interested in signing the likes of Philippe Coutinho for his new Saudi side.

Indeed, whilst opinions on Henderson might be split in the Liverpool fanbase, the midfielder is a player who is trusted greatly by Jurgen Klopp. And the midfielder himself will likely want to remain at Anfield rather than head to the Middle East for an easy payday.

Gerrard’s ambition to get his managerial career back on track in Saudi Arabia is interesting, to say the least, and the English coach’s choice of transfer targets also makes for entertaining reading, especially when most fans can gather that the likes of Henderson won’t move out to the Middle East this summer.

As we know, Henderson is one of Liverpool’s most important players both on and off the pitch. And whilst the club are now in the process of replacing the midfielder, Klopp will no doubt want to keep the 32-year-old around for another season or two, much to Gerrard’s dismay.
