Liverpool decide 22-year-old player is ‘too expensive’ to sign, he wants too much in wages

Liverpool still appreciate Khephren Thuram but have decided that he’s too expensive for now.

The French midfielder had looked likely to be on his way to Anfield for plenty of the summer window so far. But there was a surprise last week, as Liverpool opted to sign Dominik Szoboszlai instead.

That had looked like being that for Thuram and Liverpool. And speaking on his Here We Go Podcast today, journalist Fabrizio Romano suggested that it could well be.

“At the moment Khephren Thuram situation is cold because he’s considered too expensive,” says Romano.

“Not just with Nice but also on the salary side. So, at the moment it’s a complicated one but the player has always been appreciated.”

Not a completely closed door then, but it doesn’t sound like something Liverpool are actively pursuing.

Liverpool priced out of Thuram move

Having put in so much groundwork with Thuram’s agents, we can’t say for certain that Liverpool won’t return for him.

But it sounds like demands would have to be lowered by both club and player for that to happen.

Even then, there’s no guarantee that Liverpool return. After signing Szoboszlai they now have more of a need for a purely defensive minded midfielder.

That’s why links to Southampton’s Romeo Lavia are so hot, and the trail to Thuram has gone decidedly cooler.

Some fans are likely to be disappointed by that. The Nice man does look to be an interesting and quite unique footballer and there will be plenty who had already prepared for him to be a Liverpool player. But if the deal is too expensive, then you’ve got to trust the club know what they’re doing.

Of course, the fee for Szoboszlai was also pretty high, so it isn’t as though Liverpool were unwilling to spend. You can’t imagine Thuram would have cost anything like the £60m the Reds shelled out on their new No.8.

Instead, it sounds like the whole package to bring him to Anfield was going to be more than Liverpool thought the France international was worth. That does suggest they didn’t see a starting role for him immediately though, so maybe they do still have something pencilled in for him, price permitting.
