Liverpool are in direct talks with OGC Nice to agree a fee over the sale of Khephren Thuram.

Thuram has seemingly been one of the Reds key targets this summer. Report after report has linked him with a move to Anfield.

But after a flurry of activity some weeks ago, the trail has gone a little cold. Now, journalist Rudy Galetti has claimed that that could be about to change.

Taking to Twitter today, Galetti claimed that after personal terms with the player were agreed, Liverpool and Nice are now haggling over the fee.

“Talks between Liverpool and OGC Nice for Khephren Thuram are progressing,” wrote the Italian journalist. “The 2 clubs are working to reach an agreement for around €40/45m [£34.5-£38m]. No issues on personal terms.”

Liverpool looking to strike Thuram deal

If Liverpool really are now in contact with Nice over Thuram, then that would represent a big breakthrough.

The fee mentioned by Galetti also looks like being one that the Reds would surely be happy with.

Up until now there had been suggestions that the French side could demand as much as £50m to let Thuram go. As they ponder a £60m move for Dominik Szoboszlai, perhaps this would be a little on the steep side.

But for a fee under £40m, Liverpool could probably add Thuram to Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister without too much trouble.

For our money, that trio of signings would represent an excellent rebuild to the Reds’ midfield. You’ve got the perfect blend of potential, quality, technical ability, raw power, legs and goal scoring. Everything Jurgen Klopp has been missing, those three would add it together. Thuram himself was called ‘fantastic’ by former coach Didier Digard [RMC Sport]. He’d be a super signing.

Of course, nothing is done yet, though. Until we see Thuram at the AXA Training Centre in his new Liverpool kit, anything could happen. As for Szoboszlai, it looks like even more hurdles need clearing for him to be a Reds player, too.

So, let’s not get carried away. But after a quiet few weeks, things may be about to pick up again.
