Danny Murphy admits he’d be shocked if recent rumours coming out of Liverpool are true

Danny Murphy has claimed that he simply can’t see Jordan Henderson leaving Liverpool this summer.

Henderson has been linked with a surprise exit from Anfield this week. After Steven Gerrard began a managerial job in Saudi Arabia, there were claims that he could be looking to take his former Reds teammate with him.

But speaking to TalkSPORT via the Liverpool Echo yesterday, Murphy admitted he’d be shocked to see it happen. The ex-Liverpool midfielder even went as far as claiming that Henderson still walks into Liverpool’s best XI.

“(Henderson leaving) would surprise me,” said the pundit. “Unless (there is) an honest conversation with Jurgen Klopp about the amount of games he is going to play or not.

“Jordan still looks physically brilliant. He still looks like he’s got loads to give. He would still be in my Liverpool first XI, 100 per cent. Absolutely 100 per cent.

“I’d be really surprised (if he joined Gerrard in Saudi Arabia).”

Of course it would be a surprise if Henderson left for Saudi Arabia at this stage of his career. For a few reasons it would actually be up there as one of the most surprising moves in football history.

With two years left to run on his Liverpool contract, the Reds captain is still far from finished at Anfield.

Knowing the kind of character Henderson is, you simply cannot see him giving up the chance of more trophies at Liverpool for a big bag of cash.

He also quite plainly has designs on extending his England career for as long as he possibly can. With other, younger options coming through for the Three Lions, joining Gerrard in the Middle East would more or less put an end to that.

All that’s before you even consider his importance to this Liverpool team. After the arrivals of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, not many would now agree with Murphy that the skipper is in the Reds’ best XI. But that doesn’t mean he won’t have a part to play.

Until he leaves the club, Henderson will be Klopp’s leader out on the pitch. He’s been a brilliant captain for this club and he’ll carry that with him up until the last second that he’s a Liverpool player.

So we, like Murphy, would be stunned if there’s any truth to these rumours. We don’t expect to see Henderson leave Liverpool until 2025 at the earliest.
