Steven Gerrard wants to try and make £20m Liverpool player his first signing in Saudi Arabia

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard could be about to make a move to take Jordan Henderson with him to Saudi Arabia.

Gerrard took up a surprise position at Saudi side Al-Ettifaq over the weekend, seemingly reversing a prior decision to walk away from an offer. And according to The Daily Mail, the Reds icon has already set his sights on some transfer targets.

They claim that Stevie G will make an audacious attempt to try and sign his successor as Liverpool captain, Henderson. The 33-year-old is reportedly one of the ‘possible’ signings being shortlisted by Gerrard.

However, with two years still to run on his deal at Anfield, the suggestion is that it would be a difficult deal to do. Gerrard is also said to be targeting Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Predictably, former Reds stars Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane are named as another two potential additions. Unfortunately for Stevie though, it’s claimed that neither are likely to move to Saudi Arabia this summer.

Gerrard plotting Henderson swoop

This is something we saw coming a mile away as soon as Gerrard was announced in his new position.

No matter if he tries to escape it or not, the Scouser and Liverpool will always be intrinsically linked. With so many Premier League and European-based players jumping ship to the Middle East this summer, one of Jurgen Klopp’s squad was always going to be linked.

In that respect, Henderson is an easy one. Aging, slightly declining and starting to come towards the end of his contract, he’s a perfect candidate.

The former Sunderland man also played with Gerrard at Liverpool, and his leadership qualities would no doubt be useful to the Al-Ettifaq boss as he settles in.

But, in reality, there’s absolutely zero chance of Henderson leaving the Reds this summer. Anyone suggesting that he should needs to give their head a good old wobble.

Having already lost James Milner, Liverpool need all the leaders they can get in the dressing room this season. Whatever is said about his footballing ability, no one can question the role Henderson plays in that.

So, even if Gerrard pushes and pushes and offers the Reds far more than the £20m they paid for Jordan 12 years ago, it isn’t going to happen. Jurgen won’t let it. Hands off please, Stevie!
