Clubs in Saudi Arabia are now targeting a move for Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to join the league as a manager.

After the government took control of four of Saudi Arabia’s biggest sides, there’s been a big push to bring in some of football’s star names.

Cristiano Ronaldo was already signed up by Al Nassr in the new year. Meanwhile, Karim Benzema has now followed his former Real Madrid teammate, joining Al-Ittihad. And according to journalist Romain Molina on Twitter, the Saudis aren’t stopping there.

Steven Gerrard, [Luka] Modric, [Mauro] Icardi, [Angel] Di Maria, [Wissam] Ben Yedder… Saudis are definitely not joking,” Molina wrote. “They are negotiating to close several deals next week. Wait & see!”

Should he accept, there would be some big egos for Stevie to try and control in the dressing room!

Gerrard eyed for Saudi job

At this point of his managerial career, this would be categorically the wrong move for Gerrard. Having failed in his first shot at Premier League management with Aston Villa, he needs to pick his next job carefully.

Choose wrong, and that could be curtains for him.

Just look at the other names being mentioned here, they’re mostly at the back ends of their playing careers. A lot of them actually aren’t far off Gerrard’s age themselves.

Without wishing to be cynical, many of these footballers will be treating this opportunity as what it is: a last, enormous pay-day.

For Gerrard, he’s at the opposite end of his coaching career. If he wants to be taken seriously as a manager, then taking charge in a de-facto exhibition league is not the way to do that.

Thankfully, you don’t get the impression Gerrard would be swayed by such a proposal. He’s clearly very determined to carve out a career in management for himself, and is willing to put the hard yards in to get there.

Then again, having felt the pressures and strains of top-level management, maybe a gig away from the spotlight might appeal. Choose that option though, and he can well and truly kiss goodbye to any lingering hopes he has of the Liverpool job.
