Liverpool won’t sign £51m player after Szoboszlai, they’ve ended talks completely

Liverpool have no plans to follow up on their interest in Khephren Thuram after signing Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Reds moved quickly to complete a surprise transfer for Szoboszlai over the course of last week. The Hungarian hadn’t previously been seen as a big target for Liverpool, with Thuram much more readily linked.

Having moved to bring Szoboszlai in though, interest in Thuram still appeared to be live. However, writing on Twitter this morning, journalist Ben Jacobs has put a pin in that. He claims that Liverpool now have no plans to sign the France international.

“Understand Liverpool now don’t plan to sign Khephren Thuram following Dominik Szoboszlai’s arrival,” says Jacobs. “Talks NOT taking place with Nice this week.

“LFC have explored the deal and price not an obstacle. Thuram available for far less than €60m [£51m]. Romeo Lavia is the one to watch.”

Liverpool pull out of Thuram race

After the signing of Szoboszlai, this isn’t necessarily a huge surprise to hear. He and Thuram have some similar aspects to their game, and Liverpool now need a more defensive midfielder – i.e. Lavia.

Nevertheless, it is disappointing. Having been linked with Thuram throughout the summer, plenty of Reds fans will have been excited by the prospect of his arrival.

Leggy and unpredictable, the 22-year-old looks to have lots of attributes that Liverpool have been missing.

As Jacobs says, the price doesn’t appear to be extortionate given his potential and the player would surely be open to joining. In the end though, it looks as though the Reds have put their money on Szoboszlai as more of a sure thing.

Of course, things can still change. Perhaps this is merely Liverpool employing some public negotiating tactics. However, Thuram doesn’t look to be short of suitors, so Nice won’t be too worried about securing their asking price.

So in stead, we’ll take this at face value. No Thuram for Liverpool.

It comes after news that the Reds are also saying no to a deal for Ryan Gravenberch this summer. As pre-season approaches, it seems as though Jurgen Klopp is putting his eggs in the Romeo Lavia basket.
