Liverpool looked certain to sign ‘fantastic’ 22-year-old, now he might join Bayern Munich instead

Liverpool could be overtaken by Bayern Munich in the race to sign French midfielder Khephren Thuram.

Throughout the summer so far, Thuram has looked likely to become a Liverpool player at some stage. In a report yesterday, Footmercato even claim that the 22-year-old was more or less ‘promised’ to join the Reds.

But with Liverpool signing Dominik Szoboszlai at the weekend, the French outlet suggest that the chances of that happening are now lessening.

That’s in part because Bayern Munich have reportedly made Thuram a top target. Bayern head coach Thomas Tuchel is said to be the driver behind the interest, suggesting his name to the leadership at the club.

Happy to appease Tuchel, Bayern are claimed to be ready to enter into talks with the France international’s agents. They reportedly know they’ll have to put up at least £43m for Thuram, but are said to be open to the idea of doing so.

Liverpool meanwhile are said to have ‘not yet gone on the offensive’ for the player. It’s claimed that for now they still lead the way, but Bayern could soon be the one’s in the driving seat. With OGC Nice still reportedly unwilling to sell Thuram though, neither could end up getting their man.

Bayern enter Thuram race

Why Liverpool are still yet to move to sign Khephren Thuram is a little bit of a mystery. Throughout June, it seemed almost inevitable that he’d end up at Anfield.

Talks with the Frenchman and his agents seemingly happened weeks ago. And yet, the Reds seemingly haven’t made any approach to Nice.

It is of course possible that they were waiting for Thuram’s involvement in the U21 Euros to end. With France now out of the competition, perhaps things will speed up.

Nevertheless, Liverpool do seem to have switched their attention slightly. The focus now seems to be on adding Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia instead.

Very different players, it remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp is targeting just one, or both of Lavia and Thuram.

In our opinion, we’d rather see Thuram at Liverpool next season. Lavia may be the defensive midfielder Klopp potentially needs, but the Nice man is the more exciting prospect.

Labelled ‘fantastic’ by former coach Didier Digard [RMC Sport], he has all the tools to be one of the best in his position.

Perhaps Lavia does too, but we’re all riding the Thuram train here. With Tuchel and Bayern now climbing aboard though, things may have just got complicated.
