Reported Liverpool target Gabri Veiga is looking likely to make a move to the Premier League this summer.

Veiga has been one of the names most readily linked with joining the Reds over the past few months. As of yet though, nothing concrete has come to pass.

Being one of the most coveted Spanish talents, Real Madrid and Barcelona have also been suggested as being in for Veiga. But speaking on 90min’s Talking Transfers Podcast, journalist Graeme Bailey said that the 21-year-old is much more likely to move to England. And possibly to Liverpool.

“Outstanding season for a very poor Celta Vigo team. Maybe Rafa Benitez gets a chance to sell someone to his former club!” Bailey began. “Barcelona and Real like him but I don’t think they are going to be pushing on for him this season.

“So he is one to keep an eye on. Chelsea like him a lot, Liverpool do. I think he’s one who if they came in he would be more of a project. Don’t see him going in there and starting for any of these Premier League teams. Maybe Newcastle, if they got him, he might be that number 10 – possibly.

“But the interest is there. It’s not an awful lot of money in Premier League terms, under £40 million. So keep an eye on this one, there is a good chance he comes to the Premier League.”

Veiga not top of Liverpool’s list

With Liverpool close to tying up a deal for Dominik Szoboszlai, Veiga joining as well now feels slightly further away.

There was a point several weeks ago when he looked like being the player the Reds will push hardest for. But with a very attainable release clause in his contract, it feels as though if they were going to get him, they would have done so already.

So, we think it’s perhaps more likely that one of Liverpool’s Premier League rivals snare Veiga instead.

That could obviously end up coming back to bite Liverpool. Veiga not be as high on their wish list as the likes of Khephren Thuram, but he’s still a fine player.

Spanish outlet Sport described him as being an ‘astonishing’ footballer during an exceptional breakout season in Vigo. 11 goals and four assists marked him out as one of the best young players in the country.

With Chelsea and Manchester City also claimed to be tailing Veiga, he looks set for a very bright future.

For now though, that future doesn’t look like happening at Anfield. Liverpool have surprised us so far in this window however, so you never know.
