Liverpool ready to pay more than £34m to try and sign ‘spectacular’ player this summer

Liverpool are willing to pay more than Gabri Veiga’s release clause in order to sign him from Celta Vigo.

Veiga has been regularly linked with Liverpool this summer, with talks said to have taken place between the Reds and his agents. As he has a release clause of around £34m, the 21-year-old should be a relatively straight forward signing.

However, there has been chatter of plenty of competition for Veiga’s signature. And according to 90min today, that is certainly the case.

They claim that Newcastle United, Chelsea and Manchester City are all ready to rival Liverpool for the Celta midfielder. With so much competition, it’s claimed that all four clubs have been in discussions with Celta over the terms of his release clause.

The quartet have reportedly indicated that they would be willing to pay a little more than the set £34m price, if they can pay in instalments. Should the Spanish club wish the full whack to be paid up-front through, the four sides are said to be happy to do that in one go, too.

Liverpool looking for Veiga solution

This may sound like a small detail, but it’s the kind of thing that can make or break transfer dealings.

These days, most teams would prefer to spread the cost of deals over several years. Clearly, an instalment-based scheme would allow them to do that.

However, release clauses don’t tend to work in that way. As it’s an agreed fee set into the contract, they usually need a lump sum paid all in one go.

As a result, although these types of clauses sound attractive to fans, clubs may see them differently.

Therefore, a selling club being receptive to an alternative solution is all-important. If someone offers, say, £40m for Veiga, it may be in everyone’s best interests to agree on that basis. Some clubs will like that, some won’t.

In the case of the Spanish midfielder specifically, we’re not sure just how strong Liverpool’s interest is. He appears to be one of many players spoken to, but isn’t especially high up the list.

That isn’t a reflection on the player, who has been called ‘spectacular’ by Spanish U21 coach Santi Deni [Marca]. But more, we think the Reds would like to make Khephren Thuram the final piece of their midfield jigsaw. Let’s see how the next weeks progress.
